Coaching Requirements

  • Superintendent or designee requires that coaches comply with IESA concussion protocols and are held accountable for implementation of these protocols.
    • Coaches must complete NFHS concussion certification course found on the IESA website.
  • Coaches will need to provide documentation that all course requirements have been completed prior to the start of their coaching assignment. Failure to complete the requirements will result in loss of coaching position.

Expectations

  • Coaches are role models for their players and all students. Therefore, they should conduct themselves in a manner that will facilitate desired outcomes to student participants.
  • Playing time should be a balance of getting all players playing time and a desire to win. While these ideas may come in conflict with one another, it is the coach’s adaptability to the multitude of situations that occur during a contest that will realize this balance.  However, winning will never be placed above the value of instilling the highest desirable ideals of character.
  • The coach will strive to set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct with the student athlete, officials, athletic director, school administrators, the DPVC, the IESA, the media, and the public.
  • The coach will discipline athletes who display unacceptable behavior regardless of the impact on the competition.
  • The coach will know the game rules and be responsible for their interpretation to team members. Additionally, the coach will not try to seek an advantage by circumvention of the spirit or the letter of the rules.
  • The coach will assure that all medical forms, Agreement to Participate, emergency contacts, and fees are submitted prior to a student officially being named as a member of their respective team.
  • The coach will promote and work in harmony with the entire interscholastic program of the school.
  • The coach will respect and support contest officials by avoiding conduct which will incite players or spectators against the officials.
  • The coach will promote good sportsmanship of team members; including players and other team personnel such as managers and statisticians.
  • The coach will actively promote good sportsmanship of spectators by working closely with administrators, cheerleaders, and game supervisors.
  • The coach will meet and exchange greetings with the opposing coach before and after the contest to set and maintain a positive tone for the event.
